Search Instructions

The Area Decoder is a phone code database with an intuitive user interface, you aren't required to enter your query in any one format. The use of punctuation and delimiters such as hyphens and commas will narrow your search results, but you aren't required to use them. The searches "Los Angeles, CA" and "Los Angeles CA" will return the same results. The search engine will also try to find similar sounding, or approximate matches if there are no exact matches. There are many different types of searches, depending on how you structure your query, these are the most common formats:

  1. City Lookup

    [City Name]
    Example: Paris
Enter any city in the world to look for all cities that match.

  2. City, Region Lookup

    [City Name], [State/Country]
    Example: London, UK
Enter any city, region combination to display city results specific to that region. Region can be either a US state, or a foreign country. You can use country and state abbreviations as well. We currently do not support searching of regions within other countries besides the USA, although we plan to in the future.

  3. Area Code Lookup

    (1)[Area Code]
    Example: 310
Enter any North American Numbering Plan area code. This includes countries politically dependant on the USA (Puerto Rico, The Bahamas, etc.), as well as Canada. Click USA only to limit matches to US area codes.

  4. Area Code - Exchange Lookup

    (1)[Area Code][Exchange Prefix]
    Example: 1-310-630
Enter any North American Numbering Plan area code followed by the three digit exchange code. Prefix it with a 1 to omit possible international matches. If the exchange has an associated geographic location, that will be displayed as well.

  5. Country Code Lookup

    (+)[Country Code]
    Example: 44
Enter a country code to display information on that country. Prefix your search with a "+" to omit possible U.S. area code matches.

  6. Country Code - City Code

    (+)[Country Code][City Code]
    Example: 44-20
Enter a country code followed by the city code to display information on that country, and all matching city codes, if any. If you aren't finding any cities, try dropping a digit. A lot of countries don't have geographic area codes, they use what's called a "national numbering scheme". In these cases, we may make availabe obsolete geographic codes, semi-geographic codes, or non-geographic codes (toll free codes, mobile numbering digit, etc). Prefix your search with a "+" to omit possible U.S. area code matches.

  7. Country Lookup

    [Country Name]
    Example: United Kingdom
Enter a Country name or abbreviation to display information on that Country.

  8. State Lookup

    [State Name]
    Example: California
Enter a U.S. State name or abbreviation to display information on that State.
